The Gift of Simplicity

In my coaching practice, I often talk about spiritual disciplines.  Today we are taking a quick look at the discipline of simplicity  When we learn to surrender our need for possessions, we live a simpler and often happier life. As Richard Foster explains in his book, Celebration of Discipline, “Simplicity is an inward reality that results in an outward life-style.  Both the inward and the outward aspects of simplicity are essential.  We deceive ourselves if we believe we can possess the inward reality without it having a profound effect on how we live.”
The inward reality of simplicity means to accept that everything we possess is a free gift from God and we are ultimately dependent on Him for every good thing.
How do you choose simplicity?
  • You can start to only purchase items for their usefulness rather than status.
  • You can say no to all things that have an addictive quality in our lives.  You can look more closely at your shopping habits, drinking, debt, consumption, and need to own certain items
  • You can give your things away to others who need them more than you do.
  • You can learn to enjoy things without having to own or control them.
When you live a simpler life, you have more room for the unexpected blessings.

is already full.” (Mother Teresa)
