Family Dinner
There is NOTHING better for family harmony than the family dinner table. There is an overwhelming number of studies that link family dinners to a lowering of all
high risk behaviors for kids. From school problems, smoking, binge drinking to even depression and suicidal thoughts. Family dinners promote positive interactions
that ultimately contribute to both home life and society at large. Family dinners create a sense of identity, security and love for children. Family
dinners also provide such a magical degree of belonging that researchers say it is has a more positive effect on kids than even good grades or church attendance.
Of course, the real power of dinners lies in their interpersonal quality. If family members sit in stony silence, if parents yell at each other, or scold their kids,
family dinner won’t confer positive benefits. Sharing a roast chicken won’t magically transform parent-child relationships.
But, dinner can be the one time of the day when a parent and child share a positive experience – a well-cooked meal, a joke, or a story – and these small moments can
gain momentum to create stronger connections away from the table. As we all transition back into the craziness of school Fall schedules, make sure
that your family dinner takes top priority.
“At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive
involvement of parents.”
