My son is a sophomore at Boston College. Upon his first year entry, all students and their parents were asked to read David Brooks’ The Road To Character. In his book, Mr. Brooks explains the difference between resume virtues and eulogy virtues.
Resume virtues are the skills we bring to the marketplace. And the Eulogy virtues are the ones discussed at our funerals.
We spend much of our time living for external achievement – the resume virtues. We are proud to boast of our career success, a second vacation home, how many likes we have on our Facebook page, our country club memberships and whether our youngest child got an A in math class or a spot on the A lacrosse team.
However, we might want to spend more time concerned with our eulogy virtues. These are composed of things like bravery, honesty, patience, kindness, gentleness and sacrifice. These are the characteristics that matter most.
As Mr. Brooks reminds us the resume virtues all start and end with self. However the eulogy virtues honor our fellow man and God alike.
When we take a moment to reflect on who we want to be and begin to own the virtues we wish to emulate….we end up with a richer and more meaningful life.
